Kelly Clarkson, the first ever winner of American Idol in 2002, made an emotional return to the show as a guest judge and performer. Despite being heavily pregnant with a son due in seven weeks, she took to the stage to perform her song "Piece By Piece" which reduced her and fellow judge Keith Urban to tears. The performance was about the unconditional love of Kelly's husband for their daughter, and she struggled to maintain her composure throughout. Kelly also danced her approval for contestant La'Porsha Renae's performance and was impressed enough to predict that Renae would win the competition.

Meanwhile, the Top Ten contestants performed for Kelly and received critiques from the judges, with some performances receiving high praise and others not so much. The episode ended with the elimination of four contestants.
