Dolly Parton wrote "I Will Always Love You" for Porter Wagoner, her fellow performer on his TV show. When she decided to leave the show after seven years, she wrote the song as a way to express her gratitude to Porter and explain her departure. Porter was moved, and Dolly went on to produce the hit song that sold over 20 million copies. Although they butted heads, Dolly and Porter remained close and later performed the song together at the Grand Ole Opry. When Porter fell ill with lung cancer in 2007, Dolly comforted him by singing a little bit of the song to him before he passed away.
