Dolly Parton turned down an offer from Elvis Presley's manager to record her hit single "I Will Always Love You" in 1974. Despite being desperate for the Rock and Roll King to sing her song, Parton listened to her gut and refused the deal that would have taken half of her songwriting rights. It broke her heart, but she believed in her talent and kept the rights to the song. "I Will Always Love You" became one of her most successful hits, topping the Billboard charts twice and earning her the reputation as the first artist to reach No. 1 on the country charts for the same song in separate decades.
