Iam Tongi has been crowned as the new American Idol after a nationwide vote. During the Season 21 finale episode on May 21, Tongi impressed the judges and viewers with his performances of Kolohe Kai's "Cool Down" and Keith Urban's "Making Memories of Us". Judge Luke Bryan praised Tongi's ability to create emotion and tell a story through his singing. The positive feedback and reception from viewers resulted in Tongi receiving enough votes to win the competition.

As his victory lap, Tongi performed his rendition of Spawnbreezie's "Don't Let Go", joined by all Top 12 contestants and lots of confetti.

He beat out Megan Danielle and Colin Stough, both with country leanings, for the crown. The finale also featured performances by judges Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie, as well as Keith Urban who returned to mentor the finalists and perform his new song "Wild Hearts". Overall, it was an exciting night for fans of the show as they witnessed the crowning of a new American Idol.
